Dinosaurs!

Ok, since it's been terribly long since my last post - and I would really like to get back into posting more soon - I'm going to get this over with and share some dinosaurs!

These guys here were designs for a Lucky Charms spot.

And the bust maquette I made for finalizing the look (the dinosaur was CG in the final spot)

And here we have more dinos! This time for a Trix Yogurt spot that was for a stop-motion puppet!

Here's the mock-up maquette for the final puppet...

And the construction for the actual puppet...

...almost done...

...Ta-Daaa!

And in her final glory:

All done here at Calabash Animation!

wow thanks guys! all the sculptures are plastalina/oil based clays. the gray maquette is Roma Plastilina (a medium grade I believe...it's pretty tough), and the stop motion dinosaur (and it's counterpart mock up) are Van Aken Plastalina (colors are custom mixed) with a base of student grade red plastalina underneath (it's firmer/cheaper than the Van Aken clay and is also helpful so I don't run out of the colors).

the armature was made of square brass tubing and twisted armature wire with florist foam to bulk up some areas. the brass had to be soldered/brazed in some areas as well as wired together for extra strength. i'm not skilled enough just yet for ball and socket joints (and they were too expensive/overkill for this spot anyways). some parts, like the arms, were completely detachable with spares on ready should one of them break mid-shoot.

oh! and the teeth/eyes/claws on the puppet are baked sculpy III clay in appropriate colors, hardened so they keep their shape!

Wow! Really nice work! I'm happy to see you doing studio work! Did you do the puppet yourself? Also, how did you land these commercial gigs?
